Knee Replacement Q & A

What is a knee replacement surgery?

A knee replacement surgery removes damaged tissues in the knee and replaces worn-away cartilage with smooth, surgical implants.

Knee replacements are one of the most common surgeries in the United States, with more than 600,000 procedures performed each year.

What are the common reasons to get a knee replacement?

The most common cause of knee replacement surgery is arthritis, especially osteoarthritis. Osteoarthritis — or wear-and-tear arthritis — is where the protective cartilage on the bones in your knee breaks down, leading to pain and stiffness.

Rheumatoid arthritis and post-traumatic arthritis can also cause extensive damage. Dr. Silverberg also performs revision surgery on patients if their prior knee surgeries were ineffective.

How is a knee replacement performed?

Knee replacement is done thru a small incision at the front of the knee.  The ends of the bones containing the degenerative cartilage are cut away to match the implants to replace the knee.  In some cases, only one of the three areas in the knee requires replacement and a smaller surgery can be done.

Recent advances in anesthesia care allow patients to have the surgery done with the leg numb and only a light anesthetic.  For the right patient, this may allow discharge home on the same day of surgery! Ask about multimodal anesthesia.

Then Dr. Silverberg fine-tunes the positions of your implants and cements them into place. Finally, he adds a spacer between the two implants to allow the implants to glide smoothly during movement.

What can I expect after knee replacement surgery?

Dr. Silverberg will provide extensive guidance so you experience as less pain as possible throughout your rehabilitation. Generally, recovery takes six weeks before you can return to your normal activities.
